July 18-22, 2011 - EPN, Quito, Ecuador

IX Latin American Symposium on Nuclear Physics and Applications
IX Simposio Latinoamericano de Física Nuclear y Aplicaciones
IX Simpósio Latinoamericano de Física Nuclear e Aplicações

The IX Latin American Symposium on Nuclear Physics and Applications will be held at the Escuela Politecnica Nacional in Quito, Ecuador on 18-22 July, 2011. This event continues with the series of Symposia held previously in Santiago, Chile (2009), Cuzco, Peru (2007). Iguazu, Argentina (2005), Santos, Brazil (2003), Ciudad de México, Mexico (2001), San Andrés, Colombia (1999), and Caracas (in 1997 and 1995), Venezuela.

Scope and Topics

The scope of the Symposium is the dissemination of the major theoretical and experimental advances in nuclear science and its applications. The topics covered are:

Nuclear Structure, Nuclear Reactions, and Exotic Nuclei
Nuclear and Particle Astrophysics, Cosmic Rays
Hadron Structure, Phases of Nuclear Matter, and QCD
Tests of Fundamental Symmetries, and Properties of Neutrinos
Nuclear Instrumentation and Facilities: Radiation Detectors, and Sources
Applications in Medicine (Biomedical Imaging, Radiotherapy), Art/Archeology, Energy, Space, and Security

The organizers of the Symposium are the Escuela Politécnica Nacional (EPN) Quito, the Institute of Experimental and Applied Physics (IEAP) of the Czech Technical University (CTU) in Prague, Arizona State University (ASU) and the University of São Paulo (USP).

The Symposium will take place on the campus of the Escuela Politécnica Nacional (EPN) in the city of Quito.

Participants & Registration

The Symposium is intended to university academics and students and researchers working in nuclear science or related fields as well as researchers and technical staff from companies. Interested participants are asked to pre-register (by making an account to this website). Details and guidelines to submit an abstract and payment of the participation fee are given here.

Financial Aid

Financial support to participate in the Symposium is available for a limited number of Latin American graduate and undergraduate students. Junior scientists of Latin American countries at the post-doctoral level can apply too. The aid consists of a partial or full waiver for the registration fee and in exceptional cases partial support (up to 200 USD) to help cover the cost of the candidate’s documented travel expenses. To apply please submit an abstract about your presentation and send an email to the Organizing Committee stating and justifying your request for financial aid. If you need a letter of invitation please do not hesitate to contact us.

Call for Abstracts

Participants are invited to submit an abstract for an oral or poster presentation. Students are particularly encouraged to attend and submit a contribution. Abstracts are prepared and submitted on this website after loggin in. Abstract submission deadline - extended to June 14th, 2011. Abstracts can be edited, modified and also withdrawn during this time. After this date abstracts can be only withdrawn. It is possible to submit more than one abstract. No later than a week after the deadline (i.e. by 7 June 2011) authors will be informed of the acceptance of their abstracts. The list of accepted contributions will be announced on this website at this time too.

Oral Talks

Talks will be arranged into plenary and parallel talks. Speakers are asked to prepare their presentations in electronic form (in MS powerpoint or pdf format) and upload their presentation at least 4 hours before their scheduled talks. Speakers are asked to respect the time allocated which includes time for questions and discussion.
Oral presentations will be exclusively electronic (by windows PC running data projector), with no provision for neither back overhead projector or slide projector.

There will be two Poster sessions on different days during the symposium during which poster presenters are asked to exhibit their contributions. These poster sessions will have fully devoted time of the program without plenary or parallel sessions to allow both presenters and attendees to participate. Poster contributions should be in English and prepared in portrait orientation only. Recommended size is ISO A0. Posters should be printed as one piece (tilling from individual smaller pages (such as A4,A3) are not acceptable).

Proceedings of the Symposium (details will be announced by March 2011) will be published. Accepted contributions presented as talk or poster will be invited to submit a paper for the Proceedings. Manuscript submission (preliminary) deadline: 9 September 2011.

The working language of the Symposium Talks, Posters and the Proceedings is English.

Workshop on “Nuclear Structure, Nuclear Reactions, and Exotic Nuclei ”

As part of the Symposium program this special Workshop has been arranged with emphasis on low energy nuclear reactions involving weakly bound and exotic nuclei as well as recent developments on nuclear structure, including results with large arrays. The aim is to strengthen these fields in Latin America. See the Scientific Program for details.

NSF Workshop

The NSF Student Workshop has been cancelled (1 April 2011).

During the Symposium will be held a Meeting of the Association of Latin American Nuclear Physics and Applications ALAFNA.
