Measurement of 238U, 232Th and 40K concentrations in different regions of Colombia.

The natural radionuclides 238U, 232Th and 40K are the most important gamma ray emmiters present in the earth crust and its concentration depends mainly on the processes of mineralization and geological formation that occur in nature. The determination of such concentrations is important because it allow us to determine the radiation exposure to human beings in different regions and thus monitor the dose levels recieved by the population. Taking into account the wide variety of geographical reliefs in Colombia, we took a collection of samples both from sand beaches and high mountains systems and determined its concentration of 238U, 232Th and 40K using a high resolution gamma spectrometry system.
The results of such measurements show a variation of these concentration for the different samples that we associate with the geological formations, the soil type and the environmental conditions of the chosen regions. We also compare our results with other studies made in regions with similar geological conditions.
