Development of an emittance meter and measurements off-line for the SPES project

Operative off – line assembly of stable ions acceleration for the SPES project (Italy), is given. An emittance meter has been designed and constructed to determine the ion sources operational characteristics. The development of the acquisition and analysis software of the experimental data will be discussed. This instrument allows to scan the beam in two orthogonal planes to establish the distribution of the beam spatial density as well as the particles directions. The software controls the sequence of the scanning and collects data during measurement by a proprietary electronic unit. The collected data is then analyzed and the twiss parameters are determined including the emittance for both planes under scrutiny. First order simulations of the envelope are performed and a matching algorithm is available for getting a specific beam shape in a desired beam path, for example focus at the mass separation slit. Finally all these tools are embedded in a console with a friendly format that allows a typical user to perform experiments without requiring specific skill.
